Description

it was a big toss up between whether i should categorise this piece as a drawing or as a design but i think its message is so effective because it uses illustration, therefore i put it in drawing. cool beans! havent posted anything for ages! been super busy with tafe, this is a tafe assignment in itself and deals with discrimination and homophobia and yeah, that was basically our brief, the idea was to be pretty shocking and yeah, i think it does that, or i hope it does, used india ink and pantone markers and a heap o photoshop, and those with a keen eye will notice that the work draws heavy influence from ashley woods hellspawn and i just thought i needed to recognise him here as an incredble artist and freakin hero, cheers ash!

Powerful imagery, black and white creates a strong impact to viewers. Breaking down each hate filled action into simple, yet easily reconizable actions is what draws such emotion into this piece. Other than the center image they seem to focus too much upon the individuals whom are spreading such hate. Top one only shows victims feet, but we see Klan members eyes illuminating under their hoods. Members are focused on feet, but they are in higher number taking attention away from feet of dying individual. Gay bashers pummel person with a bottle, while his friends cheer. Message is strong, however person hit has been augmented from bottle hitting him making body look practically abstract. When you view body it seems odd, so you look at group at left for more information to help relay the message of what is occuring in this box. Best way to relay what message is when you finish drawing think if it can be easily recognized without text explaining it. Tag line at bottom is using two more or less negitive wording in: rage and hate. Something to the tune of, "Rise above the hate", is a more peacful phrase, which is what people should do, rage is atuned more towards violence than peace.

Looks very good. I love the style and the message is well put over! I agree that the 'rage' should be changed as its not a very positive word. Also the gay bloke on the floor is a bit hard to make out at first.

Cool style though!

It's hard to distinquish the victims. Maybe a bit of red would clarify, but still be striking? That might ruin what you were aiming for, but I find that the man getting hit with the bottle hard to figure out. I could see his hands, and I found his head a little later, but the rest of him is...confusing.

You manage to bend your style so wonderfully. Your able to cover such a variaty of subject matter with out seeming like a basketball player trying to play baseball. I love the gritty feel. You know i love ashley's work but this is your own. I was wondering how is would look with out the Tolerence, rage against hate text. It mite be better to let you images make the impact with the website there to let you know where you can go to do something about it. Really great to see you on here again. Keep it up

I almost forgot i love the ink washing going on.

I appreciate what your going for, your doing well and you have the potential to produce some really really special stuff. No crits really, just keep building that confidence. In future maybe some work based on reference or life for a more realistic edge? Not detracting from the cartoon stuff at all, I would just be personally interested to see that coming from you...
